PANDOMIC Main Achievements and Long-Term Outlook
The PANDOMIC project reaches its final days in December 2025, after 30 months of collaboration dedicated to strengthening genomic surveillance and pandemic preparedness in Luxembourg and Romania.
It brought together the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS), the Institutul Național de Sănătate Publică (INSP) and the Institutul Național de Cercetare-Dezvoltare Medico-Militară Cantacuzino (IC) to enhance laboratory capacities, modernise data systems and reinforce coordinated approaches for detecting and responding to emerging health threats.
Achievements in Luxembourg (LNS)
The Laboratoire national de santé advanced national surveillance capacity through:
● Implementation and validation of an RSV whole-genome sequencing workflow integrated into national and international surveillance systems
● Strengthened antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring for foodborne pathogens through a redesigned plasmid-focused genomic workflow
● Application of long-read sequencing technologies across bacterial species in a One Health context
● Upgrades to data management systems and LIMS supporting routine genomic workflows
● Reinforced collaboration with national public health stakeholders
These developments substantially improved Luxembourg’s ability to detect and analyse respiratory and foodborne threats.
Achievements in Romania (INSP and Cantacuzino Institute)
INSP and IC modernised national genomic surveillance by:
● Introducing and applying long-read sequencing technologies in national reference and regional laboratories
● Integrating genomic data into national surveillance platforms
● Establishing molecular typing workflows for outbreak investigation
● Creating a national bioinformatics hub for secure data storage and analysis
● Engaging national stakeholders to embed genomic approaches in routine public health practice
Together, these advances strengthened Romania’s technical, analytical and operational capacity for evidence-based decision-making.
Throughout the project, partners collaborated closely through twinning visits, joint laboratory activities, technical exchanges and stakeholder workshops that helped harmonise methods and build shared expertise. PANDOMIC also contributed to wider preparedness efforts by presenting its work at key scientific and public health events. Communication and dissemination activities, including newsletters, social media outreach and a dedicated website, ensured visibility and accessibility of results throughout the project period.
Now in its final phase, PANDOMIC delivers outcomes that provide a strong foundation for sustained progress. Strengthened laboratory workflows, expanded sequencing capacity and improved digital infrastructures will continue supporting national and European public health systems.
The project website will remain publicly accessible for five years to ensure continued access to key resources and materials.
The consortium extends its sincere thanks to all partners, experts and stakeholders for their commitment throughout the project!
Their collaboration and technical expertise were essential to achieving these results and will continue to support efforts in genomic surveillance and preparedness beyond PANDOMIC.
